Advice

You are hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make using new media?

I would tell Baruch to utilize social media sites such as Twitter. There are a lot of events, updates, and meetings all around Baruch but these information are not able to reach everyone. A lot of students miss out on important information such as when is the deadline to sign up for CUNY first or even the next big concert held by Hong Kong Club. Students go to school at a different time and most of the clubs or school staffs hand out fliers and pamphlets during club hours and day time.  If Baruch have a Twitter account students will be able to follow it and get updates right on their phone, instead of having a stack of paper handed out to them. This idea is better than e-mails because students tend to not check their emails or it may end up in the spam section.

  1. I agree, fliers are not working, most of the time fliers are thrown into a garbage bin right next to elevators or in hallways. Hopefully Baruch will use social media to promote events. Most of us are carrying iphones and ipads. Why not to install devices around the school that send information right to the iphone screen when someone is passing by. For example, I could get notified about upcoming event when I pass by the gym, or get notification that I should pay for the class when I pass by the bursar.

  2. Utilizing Twitter is a great way to reach as many students as possible to let them know of upcoming events as well as club meetings. There are indeed more people who rarely check their emails or they do not check them on a regular basis.

  3. I agree that the school needs a better way to promote events but the students have to be willing to be active on campus as well. Many students come to school, go to class and simply go home. It's hard for commuters to want to actively participate.
